White House
There was an article in The Indianapolis Star with a Washington
Dateline that said "Purdue University's championship drill team put on an unexpected
performance here last Thursday for the President of the United States. Arrangements
had been made beforehand for the Boilermakers to visit the White House, but an inspection
by the chief Executive was ruled out as an impossibility. Apparently, the arrangers
didn't take into consideration President Kennedy's interest in military matters.
When he learned about the ROTC cadets from Indiana the President stepped out into
the White House lawn and not only watched the marching routine but visited afterward
with the students. Mr. Kennedy recalled making two visits to Lafayette during his
campaign, complimenting Purdue on its ROTC marching unit and posed for an official
photograph for Army Signal Corps photographers."
